Big changes on the 2014 BI Gartner Magic Quadrant

A couple of weeks ago, Gartner launched the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms.

They evaluated 27 products and defined BI and analytics as a software platform that delivers 17 capabilities across three categories: information delivery, analysis and integration.

There were a couple of very interesting insights and changes in this magic quadrant, first being that all the vendors in the leaders category were “moved to the left” reflecting Gartners assessment that their “Completeness of Vision” score was less than in prior years. This isn’t a reflection in a decrease in capability åof their product, but a changing market and evolving customer expectations.

There were a number of evaluation criteria that were changed – 3 dropped and 5 added. The dropped capabilities were either related to advanced analytics or scorecards – more niche components of BI platforms. The 5 that were added related to the integration areas (3 items) and analysis (2 items). These areas are particularly strong for Pentaho.

The final thing that we found interesting was the aggressive move by Pentaho up and to the right from its 2013 position. This move, coupled with the move of the leaders to the left, puts Pentaho right in the middle of the quadrant. The move to the right is all that more impressive because of the consolidation of the rest of the quadrant.

BizCubed and our clients have long recognised the strategic value that the embedded data integration engine provides to the Pentaho platform and we are excited to see the leading analyst firm recognise this as well.
