Methodology is important to us. Our process-oriented, operationally rigorous BizCubed Data Engineering Methodology underpins the work we do and creates better, faster outcomes for our clients. But to better leverage the Methodology we need our people to share our BizCubed Ways and Values. So, it makes sense that we have established a Recruitment and Onboarding process that aligns with these Ways and Values.

I’ll explain.

Finding our People

When we consider job applicants, we don’t even glance at their resumes until round two. In our job postings, we request a cover letter that addresses at least one specific question, and only the applicants who follow that first process step are considered.

Once the cover letter process is completed and we’ve selected those who have met the requested submission requirement, we move on to a Ways and Values fit supported by a set of questions designed to prompt thoughtful consideration and to uncover their views on customer experience.

The cover letter is a rigid requirement, but in terms of consideration of skillset, experience, interests, training etc. we bring our value of openness to the recruitment process. We’re looking for people who can be agile in their thinking and who have an affinity for data and process but that doesn’t mean we require a data science degree. While we also look for fundamental capabilities, what’s more important is that we find people who demonstrate curiosity and a clear capacity to learn and grow. Through this process we have welcomed people to the team with a variety of backgrounds and focus areas, such as in linguistics, finance and civil engineering.

We’ve been pleased that this process has led to the bringing together of a team that can not only be data focused and aligned with our Ways and Values but can apply our Methodology in a flexible manner in response to our customers’ needs.

Supporting our People

One of the critical steps in our BizCubed Data Engineering Methodology involves sourcing, assessing and / or developing documentation to support every one of our client’s data processes. Ultimately, our goal with the documentation is to ensure that it enables the process to be consistently followed, no matter who is undertaking the process. That removes the risk of the process information sitting with only one person or role and reduces the risk of human error.

That supports our customers’ data management needs, but also supports our people who are working to monitor, manage or service our customers’ environments. Our focus on documenting processes also supports new staff as they are onboarded, upskilled and trained.

We intentionally rotate our people through the organisation and across different functions and customers so they can receive a cross-functional experience and feel the breadth of what it takes for a business to run data. They get to know the back end, the act of pushing data through the pipelines, the service side, the customer management side, the problem management side and more.

Data helps our customers make better decisions each day. Our people both employ and are supported by our Methodology to help make that possible.
